Ulm, Germany (map), 2000 Photograph by Taylor Kennedy
Evergreens and handmade candles adjoin a basket of springerle, the traditional Christmas cookie of Bavaria and Austria. Springerle are cut to resemble Christian motifs, horses, flowers, and other shapes.
Decades ago, springerle molds were highly prized as heirlooms and were allotted precious space in the trunks of U.S.-bound emigrant women.
